Hillsborough County was first explored by Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon in the early 16th century. After changing hands three times, the state of Florida was finally purchased by the United States from Spain in 1821. Development of the Tampa Bay area began in earnest in 1845 during a boom in the mining and shipping industries. Vicente Martinez Ybor’s cigar factory and the Unites States military also had an ongoing economic role in the area’s development. The advent of the automobile resulted in an area of commercial and residential growth.

Today, the downtown Tampa skyline is a picture of modern corporations towering above the bay in large glass, steel and concrete structures. A number of lovely, affordable residential communities such as Westchase have grown up around Tampa.
